Zurich Airport transfers to and from St Moritz

Zurich Airport transfers to and from St Moritz are a must. This isn’t just any winter resort – Switzerland’s St Moritz was the birthplace of Alpine winter tourism as far back as 1864.

Few places have a winter-sports pedigree like this. St Moritz has played host to the Winter Olympics twice and is home to the famous (men only) Cresta Run. There’s an outdoor Olympic ice rink and you can indulge in polo, cricket and horse-racing on the lake. The skiing is second to none and the cross-country ski trails are legendary. Come to St Moritz in winter and you’ll be spending time among some pretty well-heeled people. It’s the world capital of winter bling. But there’s more to St Moritz than that. It sits at 1856m in the Engadin Valley. That’s close to Italy, which means you can depend not only on good snow covering but also on sunshine. It also comes with 350km of pistes in four sectors, peaking out at 3305m.

St Moritz is split into three villages close to the lake. For pure glitz, go for Dorf, home of fabulous shops, restaurants and night spots. For a quieter time, try St Moritz Bad. Celerina tends to be the haunt of Italians and is often called Piccolo Milano (Little Milan). You can get a lift into the main ski area from all the villages.

St Moritz continues to evolve and its newest feature is Ovaverva, a sports centre in Bad. Here, you’ll find a wellness area, indoor and outdoor pools, restaurants and a fitness centre.

Zurich Airport transfers to and from Davos

Another popular Zurich Airport winter transfer is Davos. This place sounds like it should be in Greece. It’s not. It’s a small Swiss town that once claimed to offer a cure for tuberculosis. Davos is not as pretty or glitzy as St Moritz, but the winter sports might be better. It comes with six ski sectors and 300km of pistes. It’s a great place for intermediate-level skiers, with the chance for experts to try some tough black runs as well.

The town comes in two parts: Davos Platz and Davos Dorf. The former is good for shopping and hotels, while Dorf is better for getting onto the slopes. However, a ski bus will get you there from either location.

The biggest sector is the Parsenn. However, the other five are all good and all worth an explore during high season.

Once a place of sanatoriums, where people would come to replenish their health, Davos suffered at the end of the war when the Streptomycin drug was developed. By this stage, though, skiing had already taken over at the front of Davos’ economy.

These days, local coffers are boosted even further as the world’s superpowers descend on the town each winter to take part in the World Economic Forum.

Zurich Airport transfers to and from Verbier

There are plenty reasons to get a winter transfer from Zurich Airport to Verbier. This is the premier resort in Switzerland’s biggest winter-sports area, the Four Valleys. It’s sunny and scenic with a good nightlife and a young vibe.

Verbier is a big hit among the British, Dutch and Scandinavians, as well as locals. There are slopes here for skiers from beginners to experts but it’s heaven for accomplished skiers and snowboarders. There are over 400km of runs served by 80 lifts.

You’re pretty much guaranteed snow here in winter and you’ll enjoy great views. Mont Fort sits at 3330m at the summit of the ski area and you can see Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn from there.

It’s this height, plus plenty snowmaking, that makes Verbier snowsure. So you can book out of high season with confidence. The resort sits at 1500m but you can reach 2700m in about ten minutes by gondola.

A few years ago, the resort gained something of a focal point when it opened a complex of bars, shops, restaurants and the well-appointed W Verbier hotel. There’s a free shuttle bus to all Verbier’s ski areas from the town’s chalets and new lift connections have made getting around the whole Four Valleys area easier.

Verbier is also well-known for exciting spectator events. These include Xtreme Verbier – the Freeride World Tour finals – and the Verbier High Five. This sees world experts battle it out with complete amateurs. And the Patrouille des Glaciers is a tough touring race. For those planning a visit, it’s wise to keep an eye on ski resorts’ opening dates in the Verbier area to ensure you catch the start of the winter season.

Zurich Airport transfers to and from Flims

Another great Zurich Airport winter transfer is to Flims. This is a hidden gem among winter-sports resorts. Flims has lots of charm and, like Klosters, it has the feel of a village, with Swiss chalets in abundance and hotels not in obvious view.

This is a niche ski resort, with most of the clientele coming from Zurich or Germany, or local people who come here on a day pass. The few French and British who have happened upon this chilled-out resort seem happy to maintain Flims’ status as a well-kept secret.

If you don’t like crowds, this is the place to be. You won’t come across coachloads of package tourists every weekend. In fact, there’s just the one tour operator in evidence here. That’s the rather posh operator Powder Byrne, which offers bespoke holidays to well-off visitors.

What about the skiing? Well, Flims is a fairly low resort at 1100m. However, there’s a lift that can take you to Laax. This has around 180km of ski area across two valleys and the Vorab glacier at 3000m.

Zurich Airport transfers to and from Laax

From Zurich Airport, you can also get winter transfers to and from Laax, another well-kept secret.

Laax shares its ski area with Flims. It’s good for altitude but might be a bit strong on sunshine for some. With that in mind, Laax has diversified and set itself up as a freestyle resort. Half-pipes, terrain parks and indoor freestyle halls now abound.

Flims and Laax remain the stomping ground of well-to-do Swiss and Germans. But it might be worth a visit if you’re an intermediate skier looking for plenty of varied slopes. The lift systems are good and there’s an Olympic super-pipe if you like showing off.

Like Flims, Laax has that villagey atmosphere. Laax Dorf offers a quiet atmosphere with accommodation around a lake, although Laax might be less appealing. The Flims accommodation, based around secluded hotels hiding in the woods, might appeal more.

Zurich Airport transfers to and from Lech

From Zurich Airport, it’s also possible to get a winter transfer to Lech in Austria. This has been the haunt of royalty over the years and it has an exclusive reputation. But it’s also great for skiing and snowboarding.

Lech comes with over 300km of ski runs and 200k of high Alpine powder runs. Snow is also guaranteed from November to April. Families are frequent visitors here as well as freeriders, perhaps because it features 84 cable cars and lifts and it’s the largest connected ski area in Austria and the world’s fifth largest.

Altitude is relatively low, at 1450m, but Lech gets almost twice as much snow as some of the leading French resorts. Intermediates will enjoy the slopes best.

Zurich Airport transfers to and from St Anton

Zurich in winter Airport transfers are also popular to and from another Austrian resort, St Anton. With 88 cable cars and lifts, safety and comfort are high priority here. It also comes with plenty of snow and 340k of slopes and lots of off-piste challenges.

St Anton is an excellent resort for apres-ski, as anyone who’s enjoyed a late night in the Mooserwirt and Krazy Kanguruh bars can tell you.

St Anton doesn’t rest on its laurels, though. New infrastructure is a feature of this resort, including new lifts to nearby Lech. In 2018, the Arlberg1800 concert hall opened, complete with underground exhibition space.
