Airports in Switzerland: Guide

You’ll find Switzerland right in the centre of Europe. That means its airports are useful
starting points for onward travel within Europe.

Switzerland has seven major airports, the busiest of which are Zurich, Geneva, and
Basel. Travelling to or from Switzerland by air? Here’s all the information you need
about Switzerland’s airports.

Switzerland has three main airports. The biggest, Zurich, handles over 25 million
passengers a year, according to the latest stats from Wikipedia. Geneva sees 15 million
pass through its terminals each year and Basel handles over six million passengers.

Let’s take a closer look at Switzerland’s main airports.

Zurich Airport

Zurich Airport, or Kloten, is Switzerland’s largest, handling domestic and international
flights daily. It’s the main hub for Swiss International Air Lines, serving Zurich and
located 10kms north of the city.

The airport has three terminals – A, B, and E – and a central airside building. Zurich
Airport runs flights to almost 200 destinations in 62 countries.

Geneva Airport

Switzerland’s second largest airport, Geneva, can be found 4kms northwest of the city.
The airport serves as a hub for Swiss International Air Lines and Etihad Regional.
Geneva’s scheduled flights cover European cities as well as North America and the
Middle East. There are two passenger terminals, T1 and T2. With more and more
passengers using Geneva Airport, capacity is set to rise to 25 million a year by 2030.

Basel Airport

Basel Airport, whose official name is EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg, sits 4.5kms
northwest of the city in the commune of Saint-Louis in France. The airport is mainly
served by Easyjet Switzerland and Belair.

Basel Airport is almost unique in world aviation in being operated by two countries.
There’s just one terminal and the airport mainly covers major European destinations.
Berlin is a major destination.

How to travel to and from the airports

Zurich Airport

Zurich Airport is located 10km (six miles) from the centre of Zurich. Getting into the city
centre is pretty quick. Here are some options.

You can catch the train, which will take between ten and 15 minutes. An adult single
ticket costs around CHF 6.80.

You can take a streetcar, which is a good way of seeing the city. Take line 10 and you’ll
be in the city in around 35 minutes. This journey is free with a Zurich Card.

Alternatively, you can catch a shuttle bus. These 7×7 minibuses run at least once an
hour and serve all the main hotels. Book online or through your hotel reception. A single
journey is around CHF 25 for adults.

If you’d prefer to travel by taxi, you’ll be in central Zurich in about 15 minutes. You’ll find
this will cost around CHF 50–70.

If you want to park at the Airport in Zurich there are many official and private options to choose from. In order to save money it is recommended to book a Zurich airport parking in advance. On platforms like fluparks.ch it is easy to find and compare private car parks, that are usually cheaper.

Geneva Airport

Getting to and from Geneva Airport is easy by public transport. Choose from train, bus,
taxi or shuttle. By train to the Gare Cornavin takes six minutes, while the bus takes 20.
From Gare Cornavin, you can catch a tram or train pretty much anywhere. Alternatively,
you can hire a car from the airport. Note also that plane travellers are entitled to a free
Unireso ticket that buys you 80 minutes’ public transport in Zone 10.

Basel Airport

Basel Airport has no train station. However, if you’re travelling into France, you can
catch a train from the Saint Louis station over the border. Get there on bus line 11 or by
taxi.

You can catch bus line 50, which will take you to Basel train station in about a quarter of
an hour. Then it’s a short walk or tram ride to the town centre.

Other options are taxis, or rental cars available to hire from the terminal buildings. Note
that you won’t be able to leave the country in a hire car.

Switzerland airports: other private transfer options

As we’ve seen above, you can take a taxi, train or bus to your onward destination from
Zurich, Geneva and Basel airports. But what about a more-exclusive option?

Airport limo service/private car

Public transport is all well and good, but there can be a lot of waiting around with heavy
baggage and maybe a few stressed-out kids. Your transport won’t be especially
attractive or clean and you could be sharing your journey with just about anyone. When comparing public transport vs private transport, these inconveniences often highlight the allure of having a private vehicle at your disposal.

How about a limo service or private car from Zurich or Basel airports to your onward
destination? At Traserbas, our impeccably dressed chauffeurs will whisk you in
supreme comfort in a Mercedes Benz S Class wherever you wish to go, at very fair
rates.

For larger groups of up to 15, we can even supply luxury minibuses or Mercedes Benz

and all over the world. You’ll be met with spotlessly clean cars equipped with your
favourite drink and a few snacks to keep hunger at bay. Settle back, relax and watch
the fabulous Alpine scenery glide past.

The most popular limo transfers from Basel Airport include Lucerne, Interlaken, the
Rhine Falls and Strasbourg.

From Zurich Airport, our private car limo transfers often serve the winter ski market. The
most popular destinations include St Moritz, Davos and Verbier. When considering your travel options, it’s also worth comparing Zurich vs. Geneva airports to determine the most convenient gateway for your journey.
